Straw houses and Following directions

Beeches worked really well together this week, helping to collect sticks in order to make a stick house with a straw roof. When the sticks were in place, Beeches helped one another to hold a large heavy sieve, balancing it carefully between them whilst shaking soil through to get rid of any lumps and stones. They then mixed in water and straw, coating the straw in the sticky mud.
Then they carefully added the straw roof onto their house. We think that they did a marvellous job between them!
Beeches had a great time re-enacting the story of the three little pigs. The big bad wolf followed them from the straw house to the stick house, blowing both of them down! They felt much safer in the brick house, although the big bad wolf did try to get in!
Both Beeches and Oaks had a go at using non-standard measurement to measure sticks…we used a strip of card with 10 pigs on, and looked round the woods to find sticks that were the same size. We used the sticks to make a miniature stick house…
Oaks had a lovely time building houses made of bricks and houses made of straw… we had great fun blowing down the straw houses!
 
As always, there were plenty of activities for our youngest children to immerse themselves in…
Acers worked on their compass skills this week…they remembered which direction was north, south, east and west from the log circle, and then followed the clues to work out the answers to 4 different challenges.
 
Later on, they had a go at making their own direction challenge. They decided where to start, which direction to go in and how many steps to take. After three different instructions they recorded the endpoint. 
Acers also made mud paint, then used it to write the compass points-N, E, S,W
