What a great start we have had to 2025 in Forest School. This half term we have worked with Poplars, Larches, Saplings, Elms and Willows classes. Here is a little taster of what we have been up to!
Saplings class– our youngest children – have grown in confidence and independence so much this term. They have been practising lots of different skills and investigating a wide range of natural resources.
Poplars and Larches have had a marvellous half term, focusing on the topic ‘ Terrific Tools’.
They have used a wide range of tools, including loppers – to remove the branches from an old Christmas tree, secateurs to snip the branches into small pieces, a bow saw to cut the clean trunk into wood cookies and a bit-a and-brace drill to make a hole in the middle of their wood cookie and turn it into a spinner. They have also used different types of screwdrivers, a hammer and nails to make some wool art and the fire striker to practice making their own fires. We ended the term with a celebratory class fire and enjoyed making s’mores together.
Poplars
Larches
 Elms.

Elms have loved exploring in Forest School this half term, some of them for the first time. They have particularly enjoyed playing in the mud kitchen, the playhouse, swinging, making music and climbing trees.

We have learnt about and made some mini beasts, rolling long worms out of play dough, crushing egg shells to make snails and painting a beautiful class butterfly using some of the things we can find in the forest.

We've explored fruit in ice, rolling apples and pouring bird seed, lots of the children were very good at hammering into vegetables.

We've had an amazing time and look forward to more adventures in the forest next half term.

Willows

Willows have also been exploring the Forest again this half term.

They have been learning about some of the animals in the book 'Superworm,' in one of our sessions we found lots of Superworms hidden in the forest. The children made worms from play dough, crushed egg shells to make snails and made a butterfly by printing.

We had fun in the mud on a mud walk, crushed ice to find fruit hidden in it and rolled apples, acorns and cranberries. We are now getting very good at using the hammers.

All the children are becoming more confident and independent and lots of them have favourite things that they like to do. There’ll be more fun in the forest next half term.
