We are very fortunate at Langley school, to be surrounded by a strip of mature woodland within the grounds. We are able to use the woods for Forest School and all sorts of outdoor and environmental activities, often linking what the children are learning in the classroom, to real hands-on experiences outside. Langley also has an established wildlife garden, with a small pond, which classes are able to use to complement their learning in a range of subjects such as maths, science and literacy.

Forest School is led by Deb Smith who is a teacher and qualified Level 3 Forest School Practitioner. We also have two teaching assistants -Michele Richards and Beth Horton who will be fully qualified as Forest School Leaders during this academic year. All of the outdoor gear is provided by School and is stored in Hollies classroom, which leads straight out into our established Forest School site.

Forest School sessions provide a safe, natural and fun environment for children to develop:
  • Social skills
  • Physical ability
  • Self-esteem
  • Independence
  • Confidence
  • Communication and Language
  • Curiosity
  • Motivation to learn and explore.
  • Resilience

It also fosters children’s respect for one another, themselves, the natural world and their local community. And enhances their knowledge of nature and the changing seasons.

For many of our children, simply being able to explore a different environment and to get their hands dirty is a special and important new experience.

The children are provided with warm and waterproof clothing to enable them to work in all weathers – we don't have to come in if it starts to rain!

Every class will have two half term slots over the year, where they will spend either a morning or an afternoon session out in Forest School, led by one of the Forest School leaders and supported by their class team. Children in the early years (Saplings class) will experience Forest School sessions weekly, throughout the year.
