Butterfly symmetry and fruit feeders

Each week we start our sessions by looking at our tadpoles to see how much they have grown. They are certainly getting bigger each week! There was a nice surprise too when we saw a photo of the frog that Mrs Smith spotted first thing in the morning…
Oaks class started off their morning by working together on a class land art  picture. They learnt that each wing of the butterfly is the same and that the special word we use for this, is ‘symmetrical’. They used their symmetry skills later on when making their own individual butterfly pictures. We were really impressed with how much thought they put into these… 
 
Oaks also made very good use of the reading area this morning, as well as doing lots of other interesting things… 
Beeches and Willows concentrated hard on using our letter stones to make the words of the butterfly life-cycle…
They also had a go at making symmetrical pictures using natural resources.
Beeches and Willows both worked hard on making a butterfly feeder.
We taped some string to a brightly coloured plate, then threaded some elder stick beads onto the string. We made the beads by cutting some elder tree sticks with secateurs and then removing the pith from the middle using a hand drill or tent peg. Once the strings had been tied at the top, we cut up fruit and added it to the plate. 
Mrs. Smith showed us photos of a butterfly tongue and told us that it was very long and thin. We made lots of holes in the fruit so that the butterflies could stick their tongues down into it to eat!
